Dr. Kriti Bhagat

In a recent episode of Ryan Reflects, I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Kriti Bhagat, a dedicated private practice owner, educator, and specialty contact lens expert based in the Northeast. Her story, beginning in Lowell, Massachusetts, and evolving into a career centered around specialty care and teaching, is defined by resilience, curiosity, and an unwavering dedication to her patients.

A Career Rooted in Culture, Curiosity, and Clarity

Growing up in a South Asian household, Kriti was steered toward a traditional professional path such as medicine, engineering, or law. Healthcare was a natural fit, and after shadowing several types of doctors, she found herself drawn to optometry. With a background in neuroscience and a fascination with the complexities of the eye, she discovered how powerful and impactful the field could be. Although her decision to pursue optometry instead of medical school surprised her family at first, it ultimately set her on a path filled with meaning and opportunity.

Finding Her Niche in Specialty Contact Lenses

After earning her degree from PCO (now Salus University), Kriti chose to specialize further by completing a cornea and contact lens residency. It was during this time that she realized how transformative specialty lenses could be for patients. Watching someone regain clear vision through scleral lenses became one of the most moving and memorable aspects of her work.

Mentorship played a significant role in her development. Leaders like Dr. Joel Silbert and Dr. Rebar helped guide her, and she went on to spend five years on faculty at PCO. There, she thrived in both the clinic and the classroom, mentoring students and participating in a variety of academic activities.

A Bold Move Back Home and an Unexpected Setback

Looking to be closer to family, Kriti returned to the Northeast and accepted a new clinical position, only to find out one week before her start date that the job no longer existed due to the practice abruptly shutting down. She had already relocated and found herself unemployed with little notice.

Instead of letting the setback define her, she pivoted quickly. A prior conversation with an industry rep led to a part time opportunity at TLC Laser Eye Centers, which grew into a full time role as clinical director. She also began working part time with an MD, gradually developing a reputation for managing complex corneal and contact lens cases.

Opening Cold: Passion Meets Purpose

Two and a half years ago, Kriti took the leap and opened her own cold start private practice. Her goal was to create a space where patients, especially those with conditions like keratoconus, could receive comprehensive care without being rushed. She wanted the flexibility to spend 90 minutes with a patient if that’s what was needed.

iCare Advisors played a pivotal role in helping her bring this vision to life. With guidance from Eric and Bob, and support from close friends like Dr. Jamie Kuzner and Dr. Hardeev Mangat, she tackled everything from billing systems to office design. She brought her creative side into the space, adding thoughtful touches that made patients feel welcomed, right down to the chocolates at the front desk.

Empowering Patients, Advocating for the Profession

Dr. Bhagat’s commitment doesn’t stop at patient care. She is deeply invested in advancing the profession through legislative advocacy and public education. One of the ongoing challenges she faces is having to refer out for procedures she is fully capable of performing, such as corneal crosslinking, due to state restrictions. These moments underscore the need for continued advocacy to expand optometric scope and improve patient access to care.

Her work in consulting, continuing education, and public speaking helps raise awareness and inspire others to get involved. She is especially passionate about supporting women and new graduates who are building their own unique paths within the profession.

Reflection, Burnout, and Finding Balance

With so many responsibilities and passions, Kriti has learned the importance of self care. She has become more mindful of burnout and the toll that constant travel and overcommitment can take. Reading has become a source of renewal for her, nonfiction to learn, and fiction to escape. Books like Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle have helped her reset and find better rhythms.

She emphasizes the importance of knowing when to say no, scheduling downtime, and carving out intentional space to reflect after major meetings or travel. These strategies have become key in maintaining her energy and clarity.

Dr. Kriti Bhagat's Final Thoughts

Kriti believes optometry is a career that offers unlimited potential. Whether your interests lie in business, education, advocacy, or patient care, you can craft a career that reflects who you are. For anyone feeling stuck or uncertain, her story is a reminder that it is possible to evolve, pivot, and design a career with purpose.
